A 15 kWe (nominal) solar thermal-electric power conversion concept definition study: Steam Rankin reciprocator system

    Get PDF
A conceptual design of a 3600 rpm reciprocation expander was developed for maximum thermal input power of 80 kW. The conceptual design covered two engine configurations; a single cylinder design for simple cycle operation and a two cylinder design for reheat cycle operation. The reheat expander contains a high pressure cylinder and a low pressure cylinder with steam being reheated to the initial inlet temperature after expansion in the high pressure cylinder. Power generation is accomplished with a three-phase induction motor coupled directly to the expander and connected electrically to the public utility power grid. The expander, generator, water pump and control system weigh 297 kg and are dish mounted. The steam condenser, water tank and accessory pumps are ground based. Maximum heat engine efficiency is 33 percent: maximum power conversion efficiency is 30 percent. Total cost is 3,307or3,307 or 138 per kW of maximum output power

    Disadvantaged Gifted Students: Latinos

    Get PDF
This Literature Review examines the underrepresentation of gifted minority students identified in the United States, particularly Latinos. Giftedness and Talent Programs have historically been predominantly white with a diminished minority representation in the case of Latino, Black, and American Indigenous peoples. Although it has been argued in the past, nature vs nurture is not representative of the literature today. The literature shows that underrepresentation is caused by non-inclusive testing and identification bias by teachers. This kind of teacher bias may be caused by overt or implicit prejudice and may affect student interactions and mental health even outside of the gifted space. Microaggressions have a role in these moments with gifted teachers. In particular, Latino students may be affected in unique circumstances when compared to their unidentified peers as they may experience a language barrier or experience fears concerning undocumented status

Treaties as Law and the Rule of Law: the Judicial Power to Compel Domestic Treaty Implementation

    Get PDF
The Supremacy Clause makes the Constitution, federal statutes, and ratified treaties part of the supreme law of the land. Despite the textual and historical clarity of the Supremacy Clause, some courts and commentators have suggested that the non-self-executing treaty doctrine means that ratified treaties must await implementing legislation before they become domestic law. The non-self-executing treaty doctrine has in particular been used as a shield to claims under international human rights treaties. This Article does not seek to provide another critique of the non-self-executing treaty doctrine in the abstract. Rather, I suggest that a determination that a treaty is non-self-executing only means that the treaty of its own force does not provide a private individual with cause of action. The treaty nonetheless remains domestic law under the Supremacy Clause. It is my contention that where a human rights treaty requires domestic implementation, that duty of implementation may be judicially enforced by mandamus relief. Although U.S. policymakers may attempt to modify the treaties they ratify to obviate any duty of domestic implementation, they may not do so by reliance on a misinterpretation of the non-self-executing treaty doctrine nor may they do so by a Senate declaration of non-self-execution. In short, ratified treaties are part of our law. And it is not only international law, but also our Constitution, that is flouted when the government refuses to comply with the supreme law it voluntarily creates upon ratifying a treaty

A Note on the Probability of Misclassifying Students on the Basis of a Multiple Choice Examination

    Get PDF
The students\u27 ability to guess correctly questions on a multiple choice examination creates a problem in the determination of the number of questions the students actually knew. Therefore, it is not unlikely that mistakes will be made when grades are assigned. In this paper, a method for calculating the probability of misclassification of students as a result of a multiple choice test in which the assumption of a uniform guessing distribution is relaxed has been discussed and illustrated. To do this it is necessary to include on the examination several questions, related to the subject matter on which the students are being examined, for which the students will have to guess the answer

Mapping Atlantic coastal marshlands, Maryland, Georgia, using ERTS-1 imagery

    Get PDF
Eastern coastal marshes are the most extensive and productive in the United States. A relatively low cost, moderately accurate method is needed to map these areas for management and protection. Groundbased and low-altitude aircraft methods for mapping are time-consuming and quite expensive. The launch of NASA's Earth Resources Technology Satellite has provided an opportunity to test the feasibility of mapping wetlands using small scale imagery. The test sites selected were in Chesapeake Bay, Maryland, and Ossabaw Island, Georgia. Results of the investigation indicate that the following may be ascertained from ERTS imagery, enlarged to 1:250,000: (1) upper wetland boundary; (2) drainage pattern in the wetland; (3) plant communities; (4) ditching activities associated with agriculture; and (5) lagooning for water-side home development. Conclusions are that ERTS will be an excellent tool for many types of coastal wetland mapping

A study of on-site employee health care clinics and their possible return on investment

Health care costs have accelerated at alarming rates for the last decade, outpacing wage growth and inflation according to The Kaiser Family Foundation... These costs have an impact on everyone. Since 2000, premiums have grown by 73 percent, yet wages have only grown by 15 percent (The Kaiser Family Foundation, 2005)... One alternative being evaluated by organizations is the on-site employee health clinic or OSHEC. The in-house doctor is not a new concept; however, the new approach is more comprehensive, delivering a myriad of services to employees beyond treatment of workplace injuries. The OSHEC has emerged as a more holistic approach to providing employees with quality-affordable health care in a convenient package... This research investigations purpose is to review the concept of the on-site employee health clinic (OSHEC) and evaluate the possible return on investment into such a clinic. This study will provide a qualitative analysis of the OSHEC concept
